14 Things to do in Maui Other than Road to Hana (2022)

I went to Maui in July 2022 and chose not to drive the Road to Hana. I don’t doubt that the Road to Hana is an awesome experience, but I had limited time and Maui is a pretty big island! Here are 14 things to do in Maui other than Road to Hana.

1. Explore Honolua Bay’s Enchanted Forest

The Honolua Bay Access Trail is also know as the Enchanted Forest, and for good reason! This is a lush forest with hanging vines, moss, and tons of greenery. Explore the forest and follow the path to Honolua Bay for snorkeling or surfing. (Note: Honolua Bay is not sandy)

2. Watch the Sunrise or Sunset at Haleakala

Haleakala is the highest peak on Maui at over 10,000 feet and has a massive crater with volcanic cones at the top . Watching the sunrise or sunset at Haleakala is a special experience seeing the colors change over the entire island. 3. Hike Waihee Ridge Trail

Waihee Ridge Trail is a nice 4 mile hike in northwestern Maui where you can get great views of the island. For full details, see my blog Hiking Waihee Ridge and 13 Crossings in Maui 2022.

4. Discover waterfalls along the 13 Crossing Trail

13 Crossings is another hike in western Maui which brings you to two waterfalls, through a bamboo grove, and across the stream (13 times!). For full details, see my blog Hiking Waihee Ridge and 13 Crossings in Maui 2022.

5. Wander through the art galleries in Lahaina, Maui

There are a handful of art galleries in Lahaina along Front Street with an impressive variety of art. Wander through the galleries to find unique paintings, sculpture, glass pieces, and more.

6. Tour Surfing Goat Dairy & Sample Goat Cheese

Surfing Goat Diary Farm offers multiple tours where you can meet the goats, see the cheese making process, and sample fresh goat cheese. The daily casual tour starts at $12.

7. Check Out the Lahaina Banyan Tree

The Banyan tree in Lahaina is 60 feet high with 17 trunks and many hanging roots. It’s worth the time to see the tree in person and get up close! Check for events held in the Banyan Tree Square.

8. Swim at Napili Bay

Napili Bay is a beautiful beach on the western side of Maui. This is a great beach for lounging, swimming, floating.

9. Witness the Nakalele Blowhole

The Nakalele Blowhole is on the northwestern tip of Maui and can get up to 100 feet high. For the best viewing of the blowhole, go around high tide. If you want to get close to the blowhole, hike the 1.2 mile (roundtrip) path. Always be careful not to get too close and pay attention for big waves!

I went during low tide and found the blowhole really neat even though it was pretty small.

10. Go on a Snorkel Tour

There are many great snorkel tours that take you out from Maui’s western coast, toward Lahaina, or Molokini Crater. Sea Maui was one of the tours recommended to me.

11. Cliff Jump at Black Rock

Black Rock is just 10 minutes north of Lahaina at the northern end of Ka’anapali Beach. This is a popular cliff jumping spot, but remember that you are jumping at your own risk!

12. Drink a Beer at Maui Brewing Co

Maui Brewing Co has two locations on the island, one in Kihei and one in Lahaina toward Kapalua. These are popular locations and do not take reservations, so go during an off time or without a tight schedule.

13. Picnic at Kihei’s 3 Kamaole Beach Parks

Kamaole I, II, and III are three adjacent beaches in Kihei separated by rock outcroppings. Each beach has a grassy area perfect for a picnic or bbq.

14. Eat Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice

You’ve likely heard the name Ululani’s when searching for shave ice in Maui. I tried shave ice from a handful of places and this was the clear stand out, so I do think it’s worth the hype! Ululani’s has several locations throughout Maui. I happened to be at the Ululani’s in Kihei when it opened and there was already a line forming!
